How-to part 2

...The first two figures are the original sketches I did for the characters. As you can see, the man went through a greater change than the woman. I had the layout in my head by the end of the top row; from there it was a matter of getting them fleshed out and looking like they were relating to each other.
... It looks like it took me a while to figure out how this caveman was going to look. That beard really helped.
... The first two figures could have been a stopping point. I could have just cleaned those two up and done a simple color job on them and I might have been able to call it a day; it would have been a nice and simple solution to this assignment.
... I wanted to something more, however, and so that is why I pursued this painterly look.
