...This illustration was based on a concept given to me by the editors. I could have gone for a simpler style of cartooning and been just as effective, but I had plenty of time and decided to use it in pursuit of a unique look.
... I drew simple cartoon caricatures at first and they felt a bit too much like the characters in the B.C. cartoon strip. I painted over the top of them and redid the faces on the the way-- several times. I didn't want them to look too "cute", but I didn't want them to be repulsive either.
